Summary
This course is your guide to the world. Since this is understandably a large topic, we attempt to subdivide the world into regions. From these regions we can learn a number of geographic principles. It is also my hope to show you how you are connected into world systems that you might not have been aware of before. My goals are twofold:
- That you be able to critically read newspaper articles about foreign topics
- That you have some awareness of world systems and your place in them.
Requirements
- Attendance: Attendance and participation will be measured by a number of random small assignments both in and out of class throughout the quarter. This may include reading & responding to articles, participating in an in-class exercise, or other activities. It is also important to note that most exam material is taken directly from lectures and can only be absorbed if you attend class regularly.
- Readings: You should read the pages assigned to a particular day before the class, as it will facilitate your understanding. While portions of the book have not been assigned, you may find them useful and I encourage you to take advantage of this resource.
- Five map quizzes: On five scheduled occasions during the quarter you will be given a quick map quiz on the region(s) of the world that are being covered proximate to that quiz. This syllabus provides you with a list of features that you must know the location of on the maps that will be provided. Your book and atlases that you can find in the library are helpful in studying for these.
- One Paper: This assignment is described in the syllabus under the heading of “Two Degrees of You”. Follow the instructions given. No late assignments will be accepted. This will involve a personal connection to the geographic systems that we are studying.
- One Movie Review: This assignment is described in the syllabus under the heading of “Stories from Afar”. Follow the instructions given. No late assignments will be accepted.
- ***NOTE: The class will vote on whether to include this assignment on the first day of class
- Two exams: These will primarily be composed of multiple-choice questions, plus some short answer or definition-type questions that will require some clarity of expression. Exam study guides will be posted on the website at least one week prior to the exam.
