Our world is increasingly interconnected, and therefore an awareness of the links that tie you to other people, processes, and things on this planet is essential knowledge. We are all actors in a global world. How can we understand our connections to far away places? How is production organized? How does it affect people across the world differently in their everyday lives?
This course focuses on the economic and social transformations in our world. Specifically it will introduce you to the very basic concepts in economic and social geography. The lectures will have a strong emphasis on geographic changes in the world economy. The objective of this course is to help you develop critical and thoughtful perspectives on current economic and social problems from a geographic perspective. Throughout the course, we will examine the geographic organization of economic activity around the world at different geographical scales (global, regional and local) as well as the interaction between different countries over the long historical term.
