About me…

I am a Doctoral Candidate and Graduate Research Associate in The Ohio State University Department of Geography. I received a Masters of Arts in Geography from West Virginia University in August 2005. I am also a 2003 graduate of Ohio Wesleyan University where I earned a Bachelors Degree with a major in geography and minor in English.

Research Interests

Critical GIS, Accessibility, Health GIS, Health Inequalities, Urban Geography, Public Participation GIS, Service Learning

My research interests can be broadly defined under the realm of critical GIS. In my dissertation research, I am interested in using a critical GIS conceptual framework to understand healthcare accessibility issues through a combination of both qualitative and quantitative methods. In particular, I am interested in exploring issues related to spatial inequalities of health care and (in)accessibility to health care facilities considering participants’ responses to the quality of care experience.  An abstract of my dissertation research can be found on my geographic research page.

I am also interested in applying critical GIS and cartographic methods to teaching introductory cartography to undergraduates.  In 2009, I will be teaching an introduction to cartography course (Geography 580S) with a service learning component where students learn and apply the concepts of cartography and GIS.  Students will apply what they learn in class in a local Columbus, Ohio neighborhood to benefit the African American and African Studies Community Extension Center and the communities served by the center.

My past research, largely in Public Participation GIS (PPGIS), considered the impacts Geographic Information Systems and related geo-spatial technologies have in local land use planning initiatives.
